IQBAR is one of the best low-sugar vegan bar brands, with just 1 to 2 g of sugar and 12 g of plant protein per bar, plus lion's mane and magnesium. The IQMIX electrolytes are a strong sugar-free hydration option. Bars are pricier than mainstream options and not very sweet, which is the point for many buyers.
What we like
- Only 1–2 g sugar and low net carbs per bar
- Vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and kosher
- IQMIX offers sugar-free electrolytes with about 1,000 mg per serving
- Sampler packs make it easy to test flavors
- Wide flavor range across bars, mixes and coffee
Keep in mind
- 12 g protein is modest compared with 20 g bars
- Less sweet than conventional bars
- Bars contain almonds and coconut
- IQJOE's caffeine level may be too strong for sensitive people
IQBAR began in late 2017 as a Kickstarter project by Will Nitze, who studied psychology and neuroscience at Harvard and wanted a snack bar built around ingredients associated with brain health rather than sugar. The original plant protein bars have since been joined by IQMIX, a sugar-free electrolyte drink mix, IQJOE, a mushroom coffee, and smaller Bites.
We looked at the nutrition behind each line, how the bars compare with other protein bars, what things cost per serving and who is most likely to enjoy a deliberately low-sugar snack.
What IQBAR is built around
IQBAR's design principle is to keep sugar and net carbs very low while adding a handful of functional ingredients. Across the range you will find lion's mane mushroom, magnesium (including magnesium L-threonate in the drinks), MCTs, flavonoids and antioxidants. The brand describes its bars as containing five brain nutrients.
Everything is plant-based and certified or labeled vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and kosher. That makes IQBAR one of the more allergy-friendly bar brands, with the caveat that the bars use almonds and coconut.
The bars
Each IQBAR provides around 12 g of plant protein from pea protein, with just 1 to 2 g of total sugar and low net carbs thanks to prebiotic fiber. Other key ingredients include almonds, coconut oil, lion's mane and vitamin E, varying by flavor.
Flavors include Chocolate Sea Salt, Peanut Butter Chip, Wild Blueberry and Matcha Chai, along with variety packs such as Chocolate Lovers. The texture is softer and less candy-like than mainstream bars, and the sweetness is restrained. That will delight people trying to cut sugar and disappoint anyone expecting a chocolate bar.
At 12 g of protein, IQBARs are best thought of as snacks rather than post-workout recovery bars. If you need 20 g of protein in one go, a higher-protein bar or a shake is the better tool.

IQMIX, IQJOE and Bites
IQMIX electrolytes
A sugar-free hydration stick with about 1,000 mg of electrolytes per serving, including sodium and potassium, plus magnesium L-threonate and lion's mane. Flavors include Lemon Lime, Peach Mango, Blood Orange, Blueberry Pomegranate, Raspberry Lemonade, Passion Fruit and Piña Colada. It is a good fit for workouts, hot weather, travel or simply drinking more water.
IQJOE mushroom coffee
Instant coffee sticks made with Brazilian coffee, magnesium L-threonate and lion's mane extract, in Original Black, Caffè Mocha, Vanilla Spice and Toasted Hazelnut. Unlike many mushroom coffees that reduce caffeine, IQJOE is relatively strong, listed at around 200 mg of natural caffeine per serving in our research. Check the current label if you are caffeine-sensitive.
Bites
Smaller snack bites in flavors such as Blueberry PB&J, Strawberry PB&J and Cookies 'N' Creme, sold in packs of 10.
Prices and value
IQBAR is priced above supermarket bars but in line with other premium low-sugar brands:
- 12-bar Chocolate Lovers Variety: about $24.99, roughly $2.08 per bar.
- 7-bar sampler: $14.99.
- 10-pack of Bites: about $19.99.
- IQMIX: around $24.99 for 20 sticks, or about $47.48 to $49.98 for a 40-stick variety pack, roughly $1.20 to $1.25 per serving.
- IQJOE 16-stick variety pack: about $19.99.
For electrolytes, IQMIX is competitive with other sugar-free hydration brands. For bars, you pay a little more per gram of protein than you would for bulk bars, in exchange for the very low sugar and clean dietary profile.
How to choose what to order
The 7-bar sampler is the smartest first purchase. Flavor preferences vary widely with low-sugar bars, and sampling saves you from committing to a 12-pack you do not enjoy. Chocolate Sea Salt and Peanut Butter Chip are the most universally liked starting points.
If hydration is your priority, start with an IQMIX variety pack to find your favorite flavors. Coffee drinkers who want functional additions without changing their caffeine intake can try IQJOE, but those looking to cut caffeine should look elsewhere.
Store bars somewhere cool. Because they rely on nut butters and coconut oil rather than sugar syrups, they can soften in heat.
How IQBAR compares with other bars
Protein bars broadly fall into three camps, and knowing where IQBAR sits helps set expectations.
High-protein gym bars typically pack 20 g or more of protein, often from whey or milk protein, and use sugar alcohols or syrups to stay sweet and chewy. They are built for recovery but can be heavy, and some people find the sweeteners hard on digestion.
Whole-food bars rely on dates, nuts and fruit. They have short ingredient lists but often carry 15 g or more of natural sugar and relatively little protein.
Low-sugar functional bars like IQBAR aim for a middle ground: moderate protein, very little sugar, fiber for fullness, and a few added nutrients. IQBAR is one of the cleaner examples of this style, and its vegan, allergy-friendly profile is broader than most rivals.
The practical takeaway: IQBAR is a smart desk-drawer or travel snack, especially for people watching blood sugar, but it will not replace a meal or a dedicated recovery shake. Pair a bar with a piece of fruit or a coffee with milk if you want a more substantial snack.
Who IQBAR suits, and our verdict
IQBAR is ideal for people following low-sugar, keto-leaning or vegan diets, people avoiding gluten, dairy or soy, and busy professionals who want a portable snack that will not spike blood sugar. IQMIX suits anyone who sweats a lot, works in hot environments or dislikes sugary sports drinks.
It is less suitable for people with tree nut allergies, anyone who wants a sweet treat, and athletes who need higher protein per bar. If you want more protein plus brain-focused ingredients, MOSH's 20 g High Protein line is the closest comparison.
Our verdict: a well-formulated, genuinely low-sugar bar brand with an excellent electrolyte mix. Try the sampler first, and you will quickly know whether the less-sweet style works for you.
