Quick verdict

Lunette is one of the original modern menstrual cup brands, and its two-size, made-in-Finland design remains a dependable choice. The sizing is refreshingly simple and the silicone has been independently tested, but buyers who need very specific fits may find more options elsewhere.

What we like

  • Long track record: the first Lunette cup launched in 2005
  • Made in Finland from medical-grade silicone free of BPA, PFAS and latex
  • Simple two-size system with clear dimensions and capacities
  • Independently tested by Danish consumer group TÆNK with no unwanted substances found
  • Donates a cup through The Cup Foundation for every cup sold

Keep in mind

  • Only two sizes, so very low or very high cervix users may want more choice
  • Prices and shipping thresholds vary by regional store
  • Cups come with a learning curve for insertion and removal
  • Lingerie and accessories are pricier than the cups themselves

Menstrual cups were once a niche product sold in health food shops. Lunette played a big part in changing that. Founder Heli Kurjanen bought a cup online in 2004, found it did not suit her and decided to design a better one. The first Lunette cup went on sale in Finland in 2005, and the brand is now sold through retailers in more than 40 countries.

Lunette's cups are still made in Finland from medical-grade silicone, and the range has grown to include cup washes, wipes and a line of period underwear. We looked at how its two sizes differ, what they cost and how Lunette compares with newer brands.

Why Lunette still matters

Lunette's appeal is its simplicity. Instead of a confusing grid of sizes and firmness levels, there are two cups with published dimensions, so it is easy to compare with other brands or with your own anatomy. Each cup comes with a linen storage pouch, and the brand says a cup can last up to ten years with proper care.

The silicone is described as 100% medical-grade and free of BPA, PFAS, latex and rubber. Lunette also highlights independent testing by Danish consumer organization TÆNK, which found no unwanted substances, and the Finnish Key Flag certification for domestic manufacturing. The cups are vegan and cruelty-free.

Size 1 vs Size 2

Lunette Size 1

Designed for light to normal flow and recommended for first-time users. It measures 41 mm across and 47 mm tall, with a 25 mm stem, holds 25 ml and is made from softer silicone, which makes it more comfortable for many beginners.

Lunette Size 2

Designed for normal to heavy flow. It measures 46 mm across and 52 mm tall, with a 20 mm stem, holds 30 ml and uses firmer silicone, which helps it open and seal. People who have given birth or have heavier periods often prefer it.

Choosing between them

Start with flow: if you regularly soak super tampons, Size 2 is the safer bet. If your flow is light to moderate, or you are new to cups and want the gentlest option, choose Size 1. Stems can be trimmed if they poke out, but leave some length until you are confident removing the cup.

The wider range, prices and buying

Beyond the cups, Lunette sells a compact range of care products and period wear:

  • Lunette Cup Wash: a 100 ml cleanser formulated for silicone cups.
  • Cup Wipes: individually packed wipes for cleaning on the go when a sink is not handy.
  • Period underwear: thongs, briefs, high-waist and lace styles that can be worn alone on light days or as cup backup.
  • Lingerie: bralettes and bras sold alongside the underwear line.
  • Intimate care: wipes and other body-care extras.

On Lunette's EU store at the time of our research, a cup was €29.90, the Cup Wash €10.90 and Cup Wipes €9.90 for 20. Period underwear ranged from about €19.90 on sale to €29.90, while bralettes and bras were €69 to €79. Shipping is free on EU orders over €50.

Lunette runs separate regional stores for the US, UK, Australia, the UAE and Japan, and prices and promotions vary by market, so check the store for your country. Lunette cups are also widely stocked by pharmacies and online retailers. Read the refund policy on your regional store before ordering, as hygiene rules often limit returns on opened intimate products.

Using and caring for your cup

Boil your Lunette cup for five minutes before first use and after each completed cycle, making sure it does not touch the bottom of the pot. During your period, wash it with Lunette Cup Wash or a mild, fragrance-free soap at least every 12 hours.

Lunette says its cup can be worn for up to 12 hours, but suggests emptying it every four to eight hours depending on flow. It also notes that some regulators, including Australia's TGA and France's ANSES, recommend no more than eight hours at a time, so follow the guidance in your country. To remove it, pinch the base to break the seal before pulling gently.

Who Lunette suits

Lunette is a great match for people who want a well-established cup with straightforward sizing, and for first-timers who appreciate the softer Size 1. Its European manufacturing and independent testing will appeal to those who care about material safety. Its giving program, which donates a cup through The Cup Foundation for every cup sold, adds an extra reason to choose it.

If you have a particularly low or high cervix, a sensitive bladder or need a disc-style product, a brand with more size and firmness options may suit you better. And if you are unsure about cups altogether, starting with period underwear is a lower-commitment way into reusables.

Lunette versus newer cup brands

Since Lunette launched, the market has filled with alternatives offering soft and firm versions of each size, teen cups, discs and shapes for low or high cervixes. That choice is helpful if you already know a standard cup does not fit you, but it can paralyze first-time buyers.

Lunette's two-size approach is its strength here. Most people will find one of its cups works, and its published dimensions make it easy to compare if you later decide to try something else. If you have already tried a cup and found it leaked, pressed on your bladder or sat too low, a brand with more firmness options or a disc may be the better next step. Otherwise, Lunette's made-in-Finland quality and long track record make it an easy recommendation.

Our verdict

Two decades on, Lunette remains a dependable, well-made menstrual cup with sizing that anyone can understand. Its materials are transparent and independently tested, care is simple and prices are reasonable for a product that can last years. Shoppers who need a highly specific fit may look elsewhere, but for most people Lunette is a safe and sensible first cup.
